Diagnosis and Treatment of Glaucoma at our Danville, Virginia, Practice

Diagnosis and Treatment of Glaucoma at our Danville, Virginia, Practice

Danville Eye Center offers glaucoma patients the latest state-of-the-art technology. Our office features the Stratus OCT (Optical Coherence Tomography), an instrument that can detect glaucoma with great accuracy. This allows Dr. Cobble not only to diagnose the disease but also to gauge its severity, thus avoiding under-treatment or over-treatment of the condition.

At Danville Eye Center in Danville, Virginia, we perform a variety of procedures, laser and otherwise, to treat glaucoma. Often, if the disease is detected at an early stage, laser treatment can greatly reduce dependence upon medications and postpone the need for more serious surgery. In particularly severe cases, we offer trabeculectomy, a glaucoma filtration procedure which has proven effective in instances when medication and laser treatments fail to slow the progression of the disease. Whatever your condition, Danville Eye Center places your comfort and satisfaction above all else.

Dr. Cobble has a special interest in glaucoma treatment at his Danville, Virginia, practice, having performed hundreds of successful glaucoma operations in his career. He prides himself on providing appropriate therapy based on the symptoms of each individual patient. The disease, itself, does not produce any symptoms until damage to the eye has already occurred; the best course of action is to take measures at the onset of the disease to minimize future damage. Dr. Cobble is an expert in diagnosing glaucoma in its earliest stages, which is one reason why he encourages his patients to schedule regular eye exams, at least once every two years.

If you are interested in either testing for or treating glaucoma, please contact Danville Eye Center in Danville, Virginia.

Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic Retinopathy

One of the most prevalent causes of blindness is an insidious disease called diabetic retinopathy, in which the blood vessels inside the retina are damaged as a result of diabetes. Nearly half of all diabetics suffer from the disease to some degree, although many are not aware that they do. Like glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy usually produces no noticeable effects until damage has already been done. This is why it especially important for both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetics to undergo a comprehensive eye exam at least once a year.

Depending on how far the disease has progressed, it can be treated in a number of ways. In most cases, its progression can be halted simply through keeping blood sugar and cholesterol under control. More advanced cases may require laser treatment. Even in these more serious cases, surgical procedures have proven extremely successful in helping patients maintain or restore their vision. However, the earlier the disease is detected, the better your chance of avoiding surgery and further complications.

Age-Related Macular Degeneration

Age-Related Macular Degeneration
Another common retinal disease is age-related macular degeneration, or “AMD.” Occurring mainly in those 60 or older, AMD affects the eye’s ability to define finer details while looking straight ahead; therefore, it can have a particularly detrimental effect on such activities as driving and reading.

The disease can take two forms. By far the more common, the “dry” form is not treatable and does usually result in some vision loss; however, the progression of dry AMD can be slowed through proper nutrition and care. The “wet” form, while more dangerous in terms of the threat it poses to your vision, can sometimes be treated with laser therapy and Visudyne dye treatments.

Whatever form your AMD takes, the best course of action is to seek treatment as early as possible. Contact Danville Eye Center to learn more about treatment options for this and other retinal diseases.
